about

**** 12" VINYL EDITION WILL BE RELEASED BY POLI5 RECORDS | LINK TO COME SOON ****

Kosti is the debut album from ARANANAR, a collaboration between Adam “Aran” Nenadál and Anar Badalov. The album is a collection of odes and laments to the borderlands of the Czech Republic, shrouded in Czech mythology and symbolism.

On “Doly,” Nenadál starkly imagines the mines of a bygone age, where miners crawled “blindly through the darkness/where the corridors led/a never-ending abyss without a beginning.” The miners carry, like most of Nenadál’s characters, centuries of weight. Lead single “Dno Boha” finds a man longing to close the distance between himself and the heavens, only to find peace in his connection to the ground. It's intensely meditative, hushed and menacing, spiritual and earthly — a true microcosm of the album.

Elsewhere, Kosti explores questions of deep time and our relationship with the earth, dying customs, the quiet joys of solitude, and the return to nature. “I am heading toward something ancient,” Nenadál recites on the eponymous closer, recalling the verse of the great romantic Czech poet Karel Hynek Mácha. “Traditions spoken and silent, too/altars, vessels, legends, bones/in unexplored solitude.” Where there is darkness there is also hope.

***

Adam “Aran” Nenadál has been a staple of the Czech Republic’s underground scene, responsible for bringing countless artists — among them, Dinosaur Jr., Melvins, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor — to Prague for the first time. He’s a founding member of the Silver Rocket collective and the legendary noise rock band Gnu who now performs solo as Aran Epochal.

Anar Badalov, formerly of the bands Metal Hearts (Suicide Squeeze records) and Travels, has recorded over a dozen albums, mostly under the solo moniker New Dog. His music has been described as “both Intimately taut and emotionally wrought" and “ominous and amorous at once.”
